Calvary Young Adults Book Club

Welcome to the Young Adult Book Club! Each month, I will select a book for us to read and, at the end of the month, we'll meet somewhere for coffee or dinner or breakfast, and we'll talk about the book. This will be a great opportunity for fun and fellowship!

Below are the next six books so that readers can start working on tracking them down. If you have a book that you think we'd enjoy, e-mail me!

June
The Screwtape Letters
C. S. Lewis, 2001, HarperCollins, 224 p.
ISBN 0060652896

Yes, it's another book by C.S. Lewis. No, this isn't the C.S. Lewis Book Club (not as though that would be a bad thing!) But The Screwtape Letters is a classic work of fiction by one of the greatest Christian thinkers of our time. Lewis tells a story of the correspondence between a senior demon named Screwtape and his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood, as Screwtape offers advice on how to obtain the damnation of an earthly man, known only as "The Patient."

This is a great read, a lot of fun, and will be sure to provoke lots of thoughtful conversation! It can be found at any decent bookstore, or online at Amazon.com.

July
This Present Darkness
Frank E. Peretti, 2003, Good News Publishers, 384 pages
ISBN 1581345283

This book is being introduced at the request of members of the Young Adult group, and the discussion will be led by Sis. Anita Feliciano.

In this classic novel on spiritual warfare, Peretti weaves a web of New Age philosophies and demonstrates the power and desperate need for praying churches and ministers that stand against the darkness of this age. Since its debut in 1986,
This Present Darkness has sold over 2.5 million copies. This will surely be an interesting read and exciting discussion for the group.

You can find
This Present Darkness at any Christian retailer.

August
Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer is Awakening a Generation
Pete Greig and Dave Roberts, 2003, Relevant Media Group, Inc.
ISBN 0972927662

I haven't read a book in a long time that excited me the way that Red Moon Rising did. Chronicling the activities of the 24-7 Prayer Movement that started in England in 1999, this book testifies to the fact that post-modernism hasn't destroyed the traditions of the church, and that young people worldwide are still interested in a deep, sincere, personal relationship with God.

I'm hesitant to look at the Emerging Church, but this book doesn't speak at all on their dangerous doctrines, and it contains some wonderful and exciting conversations about prayer. Red Moon Rising can be found at Barnes & Noble, Borders, or Amazon.com.

September
Man's Search For Meaning
Viktor E. Frankl, 2006, Beacon Press
ISBN 9780807014295

I haven't actually read this book, but I've heard Pastor reference it multiple times from the pulpit. When I told him about the YA Book Club, he recommended this book first and without hesitation.

I picked it up at Barnes and Noble for $6.99, but it's cheap online, too.

October
A Christian Manifesto
Francis A. Schaeffer, 2005, Good News Publishers, 157 pages
ISBN
1581346921

Dr. Schaeffer is one of the greatest thinkers and theologians of his time, and his grasp and description of the philisophical movements of the day are both enlightening and frightening. In this book, Dr. Schaeffer both demonstrates how and why our society has fallen away in such a terrible fashion, and then outlines ways that Christians can (and must) respond to a government that has consistently defied the law of God.

You can find
A Christian Manifesto at Barnes and Noble, Borders, or online at Amazon.com.
